As kids across the country begin the count down to the school summer holidays, Virgin Media today announces a nationwide search to find a ‘kids TV controller’ to take charge of the TV on demand service this summer. The search comes off the back of a survey which reveals over three quarters (78 per cent) of children can tire of what’s on the box during their six week holiday, despite eight out of ten (82 per cent) saying watching TV is one of their favourite things to do during the break.
With less than eight weeks to go before schools shut their doors for summer, the research also reveals that two thirds (67 per cent) of kids regularly bicker with their family over what to watch on TV and who gets the remote control. In response to the findings, Virgin Media has teamed up with children’s TV presenter Zoe Salmon to launch its first ever ‘TV Takeover’ - a chance for two kids to decide what the nation’s school children will be watching this summer on Virgin Media’s TV on demand service. Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants and his sidekick Patrick joined Zoe to launch the competition in London this morning, along with Humungousaur from Ben 10.
Former Blue Peter presenter and Dancing on Ice star Zoe is giving just one boy and one girl aged between seven and twelve years old the chance to pick their favourite TV programmes to go on Virgin Media TV on demand this August. The lucky winners will get to choose from a range of shows available on Virgin Media’s on demand service, including SpongeBob SquarePants from Nickelodeon, Ben 10 from Cartoon Network, and Bob the Builder and Angelina Ballerina from Nick Jr. Their hand-picked programmes will be showcased in Virgin Media’s ‘Kids TV’ section, to watch at any point and as many times as they like throughout the month.
Zoe Salmon commented: “To have my favourite programmes available to watch whenever I wanted over the summer holidays would have been a dream come true for me, as I’d often flick through the channels but not find anything I wanted to see. Virgin Media’s TV Takeover is an amazing opportunity for kids in the UK to make this year’s summer one to remember. I wish everyone the best of luck!”
Katharine Burns Rivington, executive director of content and acquisition at Virgin Media, said, “There’s always something for every member of the family to watch on Virgin Media TV on demand including a great range of top-class kids’ programmes. However we think our customers’ children deserve something special this summer holidays, which is why we’re giving them this fantastic opportunity to have their say on what shows should feature in our popular kids TV section. So there shouldn’t be any need for arguing over the remote!”
FORMER Blue Peter presenter Zoe Salmon is to co-host a new rival show for ITV.
The Dancing on Ice beauty fronted the Beeb’s classic kids’ series from 2004 to 2008.
Next month, she’ll start filming the new CITV programme - which will also see her learn skills and try activities.
Zoe said yesterday: “I can’t wait to start.
“I’m really excited about it. This is a great opportunity for me.”
Zoe, 29, was keeping tight-lipped on who will be her co-host.
But she revealed her perfect working partner would be X Factor frontman Dermot O’Leary, 36.
She is currently promoting Virgin TV’s Summer Holiday TV Takeover - giving two kids the chance to control the channel’s on-demand service.

Dancing On Ice star Zoe Salmon has a new boyfriend, it can be revealed. According to sources, the former Blue Peter star is now dating London- based Capital FM radio star Greg Burns.
Greg, the Drivetime host with the leading London station, met Zoe at the Capital Rocks event in December last year when they were introduced by the blonde beauty’s dance partner Matt Evers.
Although the pair have yet to be pictured together, she was spotted cosying up to Greg recently at the aftershow party for the Dancing On Ice Live Tour in Sheffield.
Earlier this year Zoe confirmed that she was dating Belfast-born Hollyoaks star Gerard McCarthy.
She said: “There are a lot of celebs who are famous for being with another celeb.
“We’re both independent and I want to be known for my career.
“We’re two separate people who have two separate careers and our jobs are very different.”
But when Gerard was pictured with dancer Jeanette Taylor at the recent Fate Awards in Belfast, he exclusively told Sunday Life: “It’s no secret that Zoe and I are not together anymore and as I didn’t talk about our relationship when we were together, I’m not about to start now.
“I suppose it’s just one of those things, but there’s plenty more salmon in the sea.”
Meanwhile Zoe’s agent confirmed recently that the couple had split and she was single.
However, Zoe told OK! magazine: “I am dating, but it’s very early days. I’m really happy, but because it’s still so new and because he’s also in the industry, I don’t want to go into too much detail.”
She also revealed just what she was looking for in a boyfriend.
“I am a real romantic. I’ve been lucky because I’ve had quite a lot of romantic moments in my life,” she said.
“I don’t run around saying I’m romantic. I just end up dating guys who are romantic.
“I once said I wished you could eat Cadbury’s Creme Eggs all year round. The guy I was dating gave me 365 — one for every day of the year. I ate them in two weeks!
“My boyfriends have always been people I’ve been friends with and then it has just developed. It’s nice because you’re already happy and comfortable, and then you become boyfriend and girlfriend.”
